SHU student celebrates back-to-back victories!

By the age of 21 Tang You Yi had two world championships victories under his belt but you may not have heard of the sport.

The Malaysian Tang Soo Do fighter returns home from the 2015 International Tang Soo Do Championships – Los Angeles with gold. Regardless of his young age, Tang You Yi gained high recognition with his tremendous strength.

Tang Soo Do is a Korean Martial Arts which requires years of practice, with good muscle memory and full concentration. It is a classical martial art related with traditional martial ways, frame, and aesthetics. You Yi started training under Chin Kok King in 2001 when he was just 7 years old and has kept himself going until this day.

He won the hearts of many Malaysians with his well-trained skills and techniques which he mastered at a very young age. Surprisingly, this was not his first gold for Malaysia. He won his first gold medal in Holland during the 2013 International Tang Soo Do Championships; at the age of 19. He celebrated back-to-back victories of the championships which were awarded every two years.

You Yi is full-time degree student, studying all weekdays and training on weekends. He could not take part in the 2017 Championships due to many challenges in life; continuing his dual degree in Sheffield is one of them. However, he still keeps his hopes high and trains himself to fight the 2019 Championships.

‘I have the interest in sports as much as I have the interest in education. Sometimes it upsets me to see how people define the success of a student. I fight, fight for victory. I train hard every day to prove everyone that age does not matter. Mind controls everything. Now, my home is proud of me. I will continue to fight.” said You Yi.

He made it through everything and another success is coming his way!
